10”x10” acrylic on canvas
This painting was inspired by a photo of Michaela Coel, award winning actress and filmmaker, published in boy.brother.friend. Her work in film, from comedy to drama, has always deeply resonated with me; she’s an all time favorite.
When I saw how Coel was styled in the shoot and the way in which she was captured, I saw all the power I see in her now in this publication. The metal jewelry adorning her face felt like a reassurance that I had to put her down in paint.
